Does anyone not understand the basic message, the one basic demand of this protest???
"THE BASIC MESSAGE OF THIS PROTEST IS that Wall Street is oozing corruption and criminality and its unrestrained political power—in the form of crony capitalism and ownership of political institutions—is destroying financial security for everyone else." (Glenn Greenwald)
The corporate monster is an extremely difficult one to address, and we must keep our energy focused in solidarity. If this movement is to be successful, it must stick to its guns on this ONE UMBRELLA DEMAND: RESTORE OUR DEMOCRACY BY ENDING THE CORPORATOCRACY. We must, at all costs, remain in complete solidarity behind this one basic and general demand, and not veer into discussion of other demands that do not fall under this umbrella. If corporate money were taken out of American politics, and the American government were to become what it perhaps once was and what it has always aspired to be -- a participatory, truly representative democracy -- the public would have a renewed opportunity to express themselves through legislature and public policy, and demands of various stripes would be heard and met. But at this crucial turning point in this particular movement, OTHER DEMANDS, WHILE OF COURSE VERY VALID, WILL ONLY UNDERMINE OUR STRENGTH because, by definition, they do not have the support of the 99% who are being financially victimized by the 1%. They are other issues that could begin to be solved once the MONEY IS OUT OF POLITICS. This is the one issue we can and should ALL get behind. In order to continue gaining momentum and growing in numbers, this must remain our one overarching demand.
I move that Occupy Los Angeles adopts and releases the following demand declaration, or something similar, as soon as possible:
***
"DECLARATION OF THE DEMAND: Our one basic demand is an immediate end to the corporate rule over our representative democracy. We will take all patient and deliberate actions necessary to ensure that our one demand is met as soon as possible. We recognize our demand is a general one; it must be so, because it is in response to a endemic problem with multifarious faces. Rest assured that in the coming days, weeks, and years it will be followed by more specific demands with more focused targets. We will vigilantly continue our Occupation of Los Angeles until the crux of our one basic demand is met. We will know that day has come by the shared happiness we will experience as one people, when equal access to resources and the overall equality of wealth have manifested through the demise of the corporate monster."
***
Then, as a demands committee, a general assembly, an occupation of L.A.'s City Hall, and a national movement of occupations, we can move on to discussing more specific actions and demands that help achieve the basic demand.
I write these comments after attending three meetings of the Demands Committee, listening carefully to everyone's inidividual ideas about the movement's demands, and doing more research and coming to understand the nature of what is happening at City Hall in Los Angeles now as it relates to what has happened and continues to happen on Wall Street. Over the last 48 hours in protest mode, my concerns about the demands of "Occupy Los Angeles" and "Occupy Together" in general have grown and changed. We must retain our solidarity on the umbrella demand of the movement so that we can begin to work on strategies to begin to win small battles towards achieving that basic demand. For those who do not understand how the corporatocracy is stealing our money and ruining our lives, education and outreach programs should be set up to show how all problems stem from the larger economic issue of corporate rule.
Please discuss and revise as necessary!!!

Take away corporate "personhood" under the 14th amendment. This is where corporations get their LEAGAL political power, until your reverse SANTA CLARA V. SOUTH PACIFIC RAILROAD (1886), everything you do is useless because what ever change you make will be overturned because corporations are considered a "natural person" aka "human" and are Protected under the bill of rights. So if you make reform they will say it is unconstitutional because it infringes on their "human rights".... So a multi- million dollar business has the same rights as a human being but the power of a god... If you don't know what "corporate personhood" is then look it up.. #1 Demand, force our discussions onto the 2012 election platform
Submitted by NeverNotHere on
Both business, government and even our monitory systems are in the habit of accounting for income and expenses at different times than they are actually received or expended. In the context of trust and public responsibility this practice could be useful and give flexibility in times of stress. But obviously leveraging and postponing can get way way out of hand, and trust and responsibility can get so eroded that the whole economic/governmental structure becomes extremely unstable. Now it seems that this mistrust and malfeasance could conceivably plunge the whole world into a liquidity crisis and mega depression.
If we stay away from blaming and extreme positioning, and take a calm look at the trends, I believe that almost everyone in the USA has to admit that much of our believed in economic theory does not work for its intended purpose. Isn't the sharing of that realization the only way we are going to gather the 99%? Let's face it, even if we get 22% or 11% we will have a huge voice, and all these injustices that I think are surely evidence of broken institutions and flawed theories will be forced onto the platform in 2012.
How can we invent new ad hoc theories on a street corner that even our best universities haven't been able to come up with? We need a national open dialogue. And sure, certain issues can be tackled too, but that can't be the first priority. No matter what is done on individual issues, it won't be a quick fix. Then there will be a backlash, and all of our progress will be undone. That must be inevitable if all we are about is "against something".
I believe that every radical issue that we adopt now, no matter what the level of obvious injustice, will only serve to disperse the 99% and deflate this beautiful initiative before meaningful dialogues are the norm. People have to have issues and slogans to motivate participation, so let them have it. But let's also talk of participation because of the momentous opportunity this can be to restructure our society.
Who in the world can restructure and de-stratify society better than us, the people of the vibrant and educated population of America? We right here can create the brotherhood that the whole world has only dreamed of. We have been educated for our whole lives in these principles, even if they weren't equitably applied as we grew up, we know what we want.
If we believe that anger and outrage are the most potent tools we will wear ourselves out and alienate many millions that are home praying that we make some right moves and prove our love, concern and tolerance for all of our brothers and sisters. If we handle these early stages right and proceed with some equanimity our numbers will swell to get some very important jobs done. You who are out on the front lines must be acknowledged for how important your contribution is. Let's handle ourselves such that we can impress our families and even our parents that this movement is honorable and that we will create the first truly just society that includes every citizen.
As a movement let's together learn the art of Quantum Leaping
Submitted by MJ on
This movement will only grow & grow, thus we must build the opportunity to create quantum change.
If we truly seek to create a world that works for all, where everyone gets their needs met, then we need to address the following at the very least:
The greatest movement for change in generations is building, lets not dream small now!!
The elites seek to control all the above and more for their gain - we must take our power back in all these areas, dream a new dream, creatively innovate the way to get there, and make it happen.
Quantum Leaping will happen by creatively innovating brilliantly conceived protest actions that speak to all Americans, hit the elite where it hurts, and creatively take back our power (having all of these elements in the same action = a powerful action, or a quantum action). Mohandas Gandhi’s Salt March in 1930 was one such action, brilliant in its conception, so simple, so effective.
FOCUSING OUR DEMANDS

I agree with Daniel. We cannot try to influence a thousand different worthy issues We have to keep the movement focused on one major issue for now, and the domination of our political processes by corporations would be of primary concern. This ties into getting money and influence out of politics with REAL campaign reform. Ending corporate "personhood" would be a major goal. According to Wikipedia:
Ralph Nader and others have argued that a strict originalist philosophy, such as that of Justice Antonin Scalia, should reject the doctrine of corporate personhood under the Fourteenth Amendment.[16] Indeed, Chief Justice William Rehnquist repeatedly criticized the Court's invention of corporate constitutional "rights," most famously in his dissenting opinion in the 1978 case First National Bank of Boston v. Bellotti.[17] Nonetheless, these justices' rulings have continued to affirm the assumption of corporate personhood, as the Waite court did, and Justice Rehnquist himself eventually endorsed overruling "Austin," dissenting in "McConnell v. FECAlso I want to see some Wall Street criminals/banks etc punished. It is insulting to our republic that they walk around as rich as ever and scott free from the all the harm they have caused. It is an excellent idea to begin to sponsor education forums to educate the public such as teach-ins like in the 60s & tabling at public events where information is distributed to the public and donations are solicited.

GETTING THE PUBLIC TO DESIRE MAJOR CHANGE
Submitted by lotusgdess on
Ken Burn's did a recent documentary on PBS about the history of Prohibition. Very enlightening bit of history. Any movement that wants to change the hearts & minds of the voters needs to take a page from the prohibition movement. It took years of political action to get the Volstead Act passed beginning in something like the 1840s. If they could convince an entire nation to vote for alcohol abstinence when there was a very large contingent who did NOT favor it then I believe we can convince the average voter of the wisdom of this movement. But it will require a coalition of a number of activist groups working on local, state & national levels to get the message out and into the brains of the voters. And there will need to be prominent well respected people on board. Unfortunately, too many conservatives right now are looking at OWS as a bunch of hippie flakes, and we need to prove to them that this is not the case.
IMPORTANT POINTS AS WELL:)

I think there is an area that really needs to be focused on regarding Wall Street and needed justice.
1) We want prosecution of the Wall Street criminals who have destroyed our economy, ripped off pensioners, conned home owners and more. Not one arrest has been made of a significant Wall Street Crook. Mozilla walked free. Even during the Savings and Loan crisis which pales in comprarison on scale to this one, there were hundreds of arrests. There is not political will here. The crooks are walking free and laughing at the 99 percent.
2) We want unregulated commodities and oil trading to stop immediately. Unregulated oil and commodity trading has created price speculation resulting in the high prices of fuel and foods. POOR PEOPLE ARE DYING ALL OVER THE WORLD DUE TO COMMODITIES SPECULATION!!! Stopping this will save lives and help to revive the economy.
Also here are some sign suggestions:
Wall Street Traders Starving the Poor
Stop Food Price Speculation
Stop Gasoline Price Speculation
Wall of Corruption
Wall of Greed
Wall Street Mafia

Commit The Crime Do The Time
Wall Street Criminals
Greed is the Seed of Destruction
