Obama vs. Civil Liberties - Discussion

Forums:

The former constitutional law professor in the white house has been more than happy to sacrifice our "inalienable rights". Obama's signing of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) on Dec 31 enshrined the power of indefinite detention of anyone, including US citizens into the hands of the president and the military.

This is little surprise as we just passed 10 year anniversaries of the Patriot Act and Gitmo. Three years ago Obama began his presidency with overwhelming support from a country hungry for change. He began with a Democrat majority in the Senate and the House and promised to close Gitmo in a year. Now we can see the continuity of policy from the Bush to Obama administrations.

This makes it absolutely clear that civil liberties won't be reclaimed through the ballot box as they weren't gained there to start with. History has shown us that civil liberties are won through movements in the streets and at lunch counters. Join the ISO for a discussion of the nature of the civil liberties attacks and the organizing needed to change this course.
