Superbowl Sunday, the most watched program on television, every year. The most anticipated and analized commercials. The most expensive and exclusive commercials. The height of commercialism. The excuse for parties across the nation, as millions tune in.
In Riverside, only art can tell you what his family has done to celebrate the Superbowl in years past and only God knows where his family will spend the Superbowl memories in the future and what memories they will associate with the occasion. Arturo de los Santos and his family face the possibility that each day could be the last day in their house, shared together for years. As human possessions go .. a faceless, monstrous bank has abscond with the most valuable thing this family has ever possessed and the most dear part of their life besides each other.
This neighborhood is their community. The school is right down the street and has been safe for the children. This is the life that they know. It is addresses on bank sheet tabulations to executives and it is the loyal requirement for law (and in this case theft) enforcement but it is the essence of life to this family of saints.
This year however for precious moments they have the ability to host a Super Bowl party and the have opened their house to occupy los angeles and occupy riverside and association of californians for community empowerment; the organizations that have stood with the family in these recent trying months. Will forces of oppression throw them out in cold Riverside on business day Monday morning as the threat stands? Will they wait till a later date and continue subjecting the family to the terror of losing their house? What will be the fate of a family with four young children, facing economic persecution endorsed by the state?
All of Sunday takes place because Monday holds no certainty. One could dream of the benevolence of one of the bank that gave incorrect information having a change of mind or the other bank profiting off the situation having a change of heart. but these banks are not really people no matter what the supreme crt says. All of these nonculpable entities are threatening a disaster for four young children and their parents.
There is no reason beyond naked greed for this forclosure. Arturo has been trying to talk with the bank and trying to make the payments on his house. One of the banks refused payments, sending checks back to Arturo. One of the banks sold it to the other bank during the process of loan modification.Make no mistake, this is nothing less than a crime and has the makings of a terrible tragedy.
The names of these banks are JP Morgan Chase and Freddie Mac and whether or not they are actually evil or not is for others to know but certainty (without question) in this case these entities are in full possession the role of evil, a rancid, sinister evil. If an explanation were needed, time with the family makes this truth apparent. This is their home and they deserve it as much as any family could. Only hope exists in the face of such horror and the family and modern communities cling to it as newspapers spin about quotation marks the foreclosure crisis. The ceo s, the employees, the lobbyists for Freddie Mac, for Chase bank, these people watch the Super Bowl Sunday. Maybe they place bets, perhaps they have parties and drink and watch commercials as we imagine other do. One striking difference between these Super Bowl parties and the party for Arturo de los Santos is that they know beyond an act of God that their house will belong to them tomorrow and the next day and the next day.
