#J28 A Year Later

Its January 29th 2013. I have been occupied for close to 500 days now, with no end in sight. A year ago yesterday was the one year anniversary of “Move In Day” in Oakland, which was a day that changed my life. I cannot believe it has been a year already since I felt the sting of teargas for the first time, was stunned by flash grenades, and ran from “less lethal” rounds. I went to Oakland, already well aware of the atrocities activists were facing, and had historically faced in this city. I knew about Scott Olsen, I knew about the violent evictions, multiple targeted arrests, and non stop political repression of the citizens of Oakland. As much as you can read about it, look at pictures, watch streams and videos of it, you really don’t know what it is like, until you face it yourself. And when you do, it changes you, it affects you on so many levels, and each person in such a unique way, it is hard to capture.

CHALK WALK ACCUSES MAYOR OF ‘CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR’

Participants of Chalk Walk Respond to Mayor’s Statement & Selective Enforcement


LOS ANGELES – After Thursday Night’ Downtown LA Art Walk Melee, the City blames Chalk Walk organizers for the mini riot and Chalk Walk participants blame the City for excessive show of force, violence, abuse of power, and selective enforcement.


Los Angeles City Mayor, Antonio Villaraigosa, told reporters that what Chalk Walkers did was against the law and not protected by the Constitution.


Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, said "vandalism has always been illegal" and defended the city's approach to Occupy L.A. "That’s not free speech, that’s criminal behavior,” the Mayor told news crews after Art Walk.


Now, participants of Chalk Walk accuse the mayor of similar parttaking in vandalism and “criminal behavior”.

Occupiers say they were at Artwalk to Have Fun and Police Turned it into a Riot

 

LOS ANGELES – Participants of Occupy LA will submit complaint forms to the Los Angeles Police Commissioners at their weekly Tuesday morning meeting at police headquarters. The complaints cover actions officers took at Thursday’s downtown artwalk including intimidation, being pushed with batons, excessive show of force, injuries, and violations of Rights.

 

Activists welcome to the public to file complaints for any LAPD misconduct from that night.

The Battle for Oakland

I was writing a blog about my experiences in Oakland on J28, and am still having issues presenting the message I would like to. Instead I have decided to share a few videos with you, which show a more truthful picture of what happened that day. It started as a party, and apparently OPD has a problem distingishing between happy protesters, and a riot. We were tear gassed, had flash grenades lobbed at us, and less lethal projectiles shot at us. We were corralled or as they like to say "kettled" with many getting beat up at the YMCA, out of sight of many of the cameras.

Here are some testimonials of police brutality and abuse from arrestees.

 

 

By multiple accounts, arrestees were humiliated, beaten, injured, threatened, and denied their rights to a lawyer.  Several accounts say that a man's wrist was broken.  Many occupiers were held on misdemeanor charges for over 50 hours.  As of today, about 50 of us remain incarcerated.
