I realize without legislation passed into law by our sold out politicians, nothing will change. Which includes getting the money out of politics. But with that said, what are you top two choices we could put at the VERY TOP of our revolutions agenda. Your #1 & #2 choices to get everybody together on the same page, & to get the uncommitted 99% committed to the movement.
My #1, A Rapid & Massive Investigation, Arrests & Prosecution of members of the financial industry, an idea I adopted from Max Keiser on a YouTube clip found here http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=YUkNnQE-9B4 thanks' Seth.
My #2 Repeal of the Gramm–Leach–Bliley Act (GLB), also known as the Financial Services Modernization Act of 1999, found here (link) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gramm%E2%80%93Leach%E2%80%93Bliley_Act
Call it a wish list, but it's mine. BTW this is for idea's not your criticism, lets not belittle anyone, try to take it serious.

My top 2
Submitted by Fex on
I'm going to somewhat "cheat" here, as I think there's several "choices" needed in order to get our system working for the people again, so I have two main ideas, but they have sub ideas/demands that go along with them- there's many things that can be added under both "umbrellas" but trying to keep it to what I see as the main necessities to get what I consider the main objective met - with the idea that once our system works we can flush out the rest through representative democratic process. If I were able to consolidate the following into two concise, clear choices I would be happy to, I haven't found the wording yet.
My overall intent/main objective:
Return of the political system to "OF, BY, and FOR the People"
Two main things:
1) Get money out of politics and
2) Limit Propaganda / Media Falsehood
Broken down as follows:
1) Get money out of politics
a) Special Interest/Lobbyist reform (remove them or somehow severly limit), Campaign Finance reform, and "Revolving Door" regulation - these are nearly identical to me in their end result and reason for being so I lumped them together: all are different methods of going about bribing politicians and for big business/big money getting a foot in the door of controlling and creating legislation
b) End the Federal Reserve
c) End the creation of money as debt
d) The idea #1 from your post alhso6: "A Rapid & Massive Investigation, Arrests & Prosecution of members of the financial industry" (I really want this too however I place it last in this category as it only punishes those who already caused issue and does not necessarily prevent the same from occurring again though it is a good boot to the ass)
2) Limit Propaganda / Media Falsehood
a) All news using public airwaves/public television must not intentionally or knowingly lie, else face penalty by law (not "opinion" if clearly labeled as such, but news claiming itself as truth/fact). Currently, news media is allowed to lie and defend doing so as a First Amendment right- this allows news media to claim falsehoods as truth and to spread propaganda
b) Reinstate regulation of media removed during the late 80's and early 90's, the removal of which allowed the formation of huge media conglomerates thus unifying vast media power to a few allowing them great control and influence of public knowledge and public opinion, especially when linked with item "a" above.
Somewhere along the line I'd really like to stick in: Removal of the Patriot Act, or at the very least demand it be used in order to meet the above (might be useful in "A Rapid & Massive Investigation, Arrests & Prosecution of members of the financial industry" but at some point the Patriot Act has gotta go in my opinion and the sooner the better)
Apologies for bending your rules a bit alhso6. I may have forgotten something, there is Kaluah in my coffee afterall at the moment *hums*, there's a lot more I would like to do, I view the above as allowing for our system to work and things such as re-instate Glass-Steagall or ending the war on drugs or ending our wars overseas or lessening our dependence on oil (all of which I am totally for and the list goes on) I believe can be done through the "regular" legislative/voting process once representation actually represents the American public. Wish I could have thought of two choices, I could not however think of 2 that on their own would actually change much if anything :/
Edit: from discussion on another thread alhso6, I'd stick Glass-Steagall as part of 1.a. I could even be convinced ending the Fed as part of 1.a as well if think about that institution as "revolving door" politics (which it is, but I think there's more problems with the Fed than just that).

My comment further consolidated
Submitted by Fex on
After some thought, perhaps I should not have posted the above under this topic, lumping together a ton of ideas under categories like I did is probably something this thread is trying to avoid. If the OP feels it's not in the spirit of the thread, by all means ask me to edit or remove my above comment (I can post it elsewhere if I feel the need, no big deal). As a way to consolidate some into 2 thoughts, well they are more of slogans or general ideas than a specific demand (and other ideas aside from my own listed above apply under these), how about:
1) Separate big money and the government
2) Address media falsehood

I'm totally on board, get capital and the government separated, and moving further than what you said, let's separate capital from our media system, or establish and fund new media systems. Finally, let's hold EVERYONE accountable to facts. The reason falsehood in the media is so difficult to pin down, is that the biggest falsehood is the omission of truth, the omission of stories, the omission of reality. As long as the corporates own the mainstream, we will have this problem.

THE Two Immediate Things?????
Submitted by Rancho Larry on
There is really, as I see it, just ONE must get done thing, but I posted a second thought as well.
1. Legitimize the just claim of people to peacefully assemble on publics grounds, heretofore known as the Public Commons, to assert their First Amendment Rights to redress their grievances to the government. This of course includes Mass demonstrations, Occupying actions and Actions of Law brought before Federal Courts to clarify and define the standing of the Constitutional Law over state and local codes, curfews and regulations. If THIS cannot be completed, then #2 and all other subsequent peaceful actions are rendered moot (of little or no practical value or meaning). THAT said…….
2. Explore the options of removing the huge sums of dirty money from ALL elections, which unjustly influences legislation in direct favor of the super-contributors. These options include picking existing party candidates (kinda lame right now), establishing other political parities/organizations (Geeze), and or calling for a Constitutional Convention to limit WHO and how MUCH can be contributed to any single campaign for any single election. (and LIFE TIME jail sentences for those that get caught screwing around with this on BOTH sides)
That is the job as I see it. Whoa… What have we stumbled into here????
This Ain’t No Party This Ain’t No Disco This Ain’t no Fooling Around..

Socialist government programs in competition with capitalist business, government provides you with the necessities, business provides you with the opportunity to live beyond your needs.
1. Government can create jobs when necessary until the state of the economy stabilizes.
2. Prosecute those who took advantage of loopholes in politics and business causing all of this.

Debt Restructuring does not require a Default first.
Submitted by OccupyNews.net on
Tens of millions of people are losing their wealth to the government and the big banks because they cannot restructure their debt without first being declared a defaulter.
I would change this banking law as a direct result of the false prosperous economy that Wall Street created over the past ten years. I would change the law to "Debt Restructuring DOES NOT first require a default".
The second one would be bringing back Glass / Steagall.

My top two (though I actually have 3):
1) Restore Glass Steagall (not 'Glass Steagall Lite')
2) Campaign finance reform. Public financing and an equal playing field for all candidates, removing ALL corporate money from the voting process. (Which eludes to one of the other things I'm leaving off here.)

My top 2:
1) Put forth legislation that limits the "personhood" of corporations to those actions that are necessary to conduct business, like entering into a contract and so forth. But constitutional rights should not cover the "personhood" of corporations. Those should be limited to flesh and blood people.
2) Agree with getting money out of politics. Especially in the sense of severely limiting lobbying spending by and on behalf of for-profit groups.
1. I agree that we need to
Submitted by cryptomnesiac on
1. I agree that we need to neutralize the bribery and intimidation wealthy individuals and corporations are currently empowered with. The practice of democracy will absolutely not move forward until the public becomes the constituency again.
2. We need to get Americans out of debt, and wage slavery/serfdom. There are a lot of methods proposed (increasing minimum wage to living wage, strengthening the public works so that jobs become available to the millions of Americans out of work, debt forgiveness, etc.). Until the middle class or underclass person is freed from the preoccupation of mere survival, they will not have the luxury of participation, and thus representation, in politics.

Number One: Gain public
Submitted by Mahayana on
Number One: Gain public support.
Without this we are powerless. We can't claim to be THE 99% when less than 10% of the 99% are on our side. Most of the other 99% don't support us because they either aren't aware of us or are grossly misinformed by what they see or read in the media. I have a good friend who just started working in downtown LA, and two days ago I suggested we meet at the Occupy movement. She had no idea what I was talking about. Then she says "oh, yeah, I think I heard something about that in the news". (And she is an activist-minded intelligent 20something girl so I assumed she was completely aware of this) This is COMPLETELY off the radar for many people.
Older People: We scare the SHIT out of them. Yes, old folks make up a large part of the 99% I guarantee you they'd be with us if they knew what we were really about. People like my 82 year old father think the Occupy movement is a bunch of commies trying to overthrow the Gov't and get rid of the constitution. I had to explain to him that our Government was overthrown long ago and taken over by Wall Street. We're just trying to get it back. As a man who spent 30 years of his life serving his country, I can see why my dad is in denial about this. I'll have him converted by the end of the year. :) We need to reach out and explain to people what this is all about because the media certainly isn't going to do it for us!
My Proposal: Occupy Evangelists! Okay, maybe it could be called the Occupy Street Team. It is very simple and cheap to print up flyers explaining what the Occupy movement is about. Just a simple explanation that does not lean left or right (anti-corruption is pretty non-partisan, right?) with some pertinent facts and statistics. I'm planning on doing this at my local Farmers Market. The flyer I'm working on now won't be specifically about the Occupy movement, just the issues that the Occupy movement addresses. I think the Occupy Team should do the same & create some informational flyers that have been approved through the GA, and then distribute like crazy!
At the age of 16, some guy at Venice Beach handed me a flyer about the fast food industry. It talked about the McDonalds corporation owning land in third world countries to raise cattle for our big macs, while the people in these poor countries were starving in part because THEIR land was being used to feed US. That simple little flyer changed my world view. I never saw things the same after that. My senior year of H.S., McDonalds came to my school on career day to recruit and I photocopied the shit out of those flyers and posted them around my school. (I still have that flyer somewhere too.) Sorry, off topic but my point is that knowledge is powerful. It is up to us to educate.
Number Two: Target the source
I have seen a LOT of issues brought up that are all worthy of being addressed. Many of these issues are symptoms of one thing: The Corporate/Wall Street influence on OUR government. You can't even call it an influence really because it's more of a takeover. You have Monsanto and the Pharmaceutical giants all throughout the FDA. Timothy Geithner was an adviser to Goldman Sachs and even offered the position as CEO to Citibank. He turned it down to take a position that would give him greater power to cater to the will of the banks: US Secretary of the Treasury. We have people in the Securities and Exchange commission that came from FINRA (where Bernie Maddoff was once a vice chairman) whom are notorious for misinforming investors. There are SO many conflicts of interest within our government that it is absurd people haven't been protesting in front of the White House for years! Government Regulations are ineffective for the most part because the regulators have financial ties to those they are supposedly regulating!
If we target the source, we will see the symptoms (unemployment, recession, poverty, outrageous education and healthcare costs) subside.
The legitimate object of government, is to do for a community of people, whatever they need to have done, but can not do, at all, or can not, so well do, for themselves - in their separate, and individual capacities. -Abe

Demand machine-readable, printed paper ballots to enable recounts and scrub all the ALEC voter-suppression laws from the books (actually scrub all ALEC laws from the books!).

Really, my two main goals (they cover a host of smaller ones, including the ones I've already mentioned) are:
Halt the activities of the global criminal class that is destroying our society/economy/environment and the politicians in collusion with them.
Institute a truly just & representative government (of, by & for the people) under the Constitution, the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights (to which we are already signatories) and the rule of law to bring our society/economy/environment into balance.

history of retro active immunity
Submitted by dan cooper on
HISTORY OF RETRO ACTIVE IMMUNITY IN THE UNITED STATES
1. given for unconstitutional use of torture
2. given for illegal merger of banks (we can see the effects of that now)
3. given to telecom company for illegal wire taps. (Fisa bill that led to the patriot act)
4. given to Judges for taking bribes. (SBX211)
If we could put together a petition to repeal SBX211 (retro active immunity) given to judges for taking bribes from the county and given to all governmental employee's that gave the bribes, Then you would put yourself in a very stong possition for further negotiations. LET ME PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY.
1. judges get paid a state salary of $178,789.00 a year with medical and retirement benefits up to 75% of their salary from the state.
2. Los Angeles County is currenty giving the judges an additional $57,688.00 per year per judge. there are 460 judges that equals to $26,536,480.00 per year.
3. in the case of sturgeon vs Los Angeles County those payments were found to be unconstitutional / illegal. after that decission the judges paid a lobbyist to pass SBX211 ( retro active immunity from prosecution)
4. There is no bigger user of the court then L.A.County, put it this way, if you and I were in court and my name is L.A. County and your name is OWS and I hand the judge $57,688.00 and I tell him I'm concerned about his retirement and I want to give you some suplimental benefitts. THAT IS A BRIBE.
5. If we demand to repeal SBX211 and demand that corperations and governmental agencie's are held to the same standards of the LAW that everyone else is held to the LAW. then we could exspect juctice and fair play.
6. demand that the $26 and a half million spent on suplamental benefitts be appropriated towards a fair and open banking commitee. ( don't worry about those judges they are well compensated by the STATE as per the CA constitution.) Also if SBX211 was repealed the the Los Angeles Superior Court judges would be forced to return all the money they took from the county. APPOXIMATELY $400 MILLION. If you want a bank oversight committee you will need to hire alot of accountants. $400 million plus $26.5 million annually would be a very good way to actually do it.
7. here is a list of reasons for the petition to repeal SBX211.
A. SBX211 does not restore due process
B. SBX211 violates Article 1 section 9
C. SBX211 violates the 14th amendment (no equal protections)
D. SBX211 violate checks and balances between legislative and Judicial powers.
E. Judges do not disclose the county payments at the onset of any trial where the county is either a party to the case or has a financial interest. (Judges violate Judicial codes of ethics)
F. Judges refuse to recuse themselves when requested under CCP170
G. Judges find themselves unbiased and then file an order striking statement.
ADDITIONAL FOOD FOR THOUGHT BELOW
Robert kennedy spoke out against retro active immunity..."QUOTE" (The very idea of "retroactive immunity" ... is so radical, so repugnant to the most basic principles of the "rule of law," that only one prior attempt can be found in recent history (at least from my research): the efforts by some in Congress (in 1965) to enact a law retroactively legalizing the mergers by six large banks which clearly -- as a federal court found -- were illegal under our nation's antitrust laws.
The banks knew when they merged that they were almost certainly violating anti-trust laws. But they did it anyway. And when courts began ruling that their behavior was illegal, they ran to Congress to demand that a law be passed granting them amnesty, claiming that the consequences would be ruinous if they were held accountable under the law. ) But the very concept of retroactive amnesty, the idea that corporations could break the law and then have Congress pass a special law legalizing their lawbreaking conduct, was so profoundly offensive to Sen. Robert Kennedy (who had been the Attorney General when the banks broke the law with their mergers), as well as then-Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach, that they engaged in extraordinary efforts to try to put a stop to this Congressional travesty.when the banks broke the law with their mergers),
Robert Kennedy could not stop them. We should try to follow in robert kennedy's efforts in putting a stop to congressional travesty's. REPEAL SBX211
SECTION FROM SBX211
This bill would provide that no governmental entity, or officer or employee of a governmental entity, shall incur any liability or be subject to prosecution or disciplinary action because of benefits provided to a judge under the official action of a governmental entity prior to the effective date of this bill on the ground that those benefits were not authorized under law.

I vote for Mahayana's post.
Present the movement as populist. Stay away from the left and right frames and avoid the usual litany of issues. Lead off with a narrative of why we think the banks are responsible for this mess -- and I said banks, not "the fed". OWS is attacking banks, insurance companies, stock markets, brokers, ratings agencies, mortgage holders, etc. The fed is in there, too, but the fed is not wall street. That concept is very central to the idea of going after Wall Street. Highlight successes and short term goals. Explain the diversity of ideas.
I think the unemployment issue will resonate with a lot of people, and kind of separate out the enemies.

For consolidating at some later date, perhaps use the links from the list of posts you made earlier regarding main discussions/issues/topics etc that relate, since most (if not all) of the distilled thoughts here have been hashed out and discussed in those threads earlier.
I like this current thread a lot so far. What I find really neat about this developing list of ideas, from my point of view, is this: if this list were to go into effect today for real, I wouldn't have a problem with it. Sure there's a couple items maybe I do not see as eye to eye on as some other items- but I don't disagree with it as a whole (and it's rather non-partisan too: on topic ideas of getting sh*t done). In other words, I for one wouldn't "hard block" any of it (mebe edit some, but no need to be nit picky right now). This is fantastic.

WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE
Submitted by Justin on
Hey everyone, here is what I've written so far on the adjustments that need to be made to the system. The biggest things is choosing demands that pretty much everyone who is not a wealth elite will agree on. We need to build enough populace to force politicians to agree with our demands, or else face recall or heavily supported alternative candidates. WE SHOULD DIRECTLY INFORM POLITICANS WHO VOTE AGAINST THE NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE THAT WE WILL EJECT THEM FROM POWER THROUGH LEGAL MEANS. That meas, the next time Feinstein goes with the corporations, or votes for a continuation of war, we are willing and powerful enough to vote her out of office. No more corporate playing both sides.
Given all that, here are the demands we should make in order of precedence and use this to build a political movement.
1. Have congress pass a constitutional amendment to revoke the Citizen's United Decision and reinstate limits on campaign contributions. We can't have a real democracy with all this lobbying money controlling everything.
2. After this, enact legistlation to further limit corporations' abilities to lobby via NGO's and direct campaign contributions. The system was already broken before the Citizen's United Decision, and we need to bring things to where they should be, not where they were. We need to analyze exactly how the corporations have gotten around regulations in the past, and make sure they are severly limited in their actions.
3. Raise the capital gains tax. If the top 400 wealth holders earn the majority of their gains not through income but rather through the growth of assets, we need to ensure they are taxed at the same rate the rest of the population is. Let's raise the capital gains tax from 15% to 28% where they were in the Reagan era.
4. A .5% transaction tax on the NYSE, NASDAQ, CBOE, and the CSE. The London Stock Exchange has this, and did not suffer the same instability.
5. Reinstatement of Glass-Steagall act.
6. Revoke oil industry subsidies.
7. Cut the defense budget by 50%, removing the US' influence out of Afghanistan and Iraq, withdrawing completely.
8. Grant subsidies and investment for clean energy, including wind and solar generation, as well as electric vehicles.
9. Enact single-payer goverment sponsored healthcare.
10. Equalize the production playing field by demanding that foreign trading partners such as China have equal labor and health rights for its workers. We need to remove the competitive advantage they have over us in that they exploit their labor. This will prevent them from having artificial low production costs, and will increase local production.
11. We need a democratically run media system separate from the corporate media system, that has equal access. Something similar to KPFK. The issue is that corporate media is running the minds of the public at large and turning their interests against themselves.
12. Re-enact commonsense environmental legislation.
13. Redirect funds to our educational system that have been chipped away.
