PRINCIPLES OF SOLIDARITY

8:06 pm, Jessie, Volunteer Reads our 'Principles of Solidarity':

We are the 99% and we have moved to reclaim our mortgaged future. Through a direct Democratic process we have come together as individuals and crafted these principles of solidarity which are points of unity that include but are not limited to:

PRINCIPIOS DE SOLIDARIDAD

Somes el 99% de la sociedad y nos hemos movilizado para reclamar todos unidos el futuro que nos ha sido arrebatado.

A traves de un proceso de democracia participativa directa, nos hemos reunido como individuos y creado los sigurientes principos de solidaridad, entre otros:

Practicar la democracia participativa, directa, y transparente;

Ejercitar nuestra reponsabilidad personal y colectiva;

Reconocer el valor inherente de cada individuo y la influencia que tiene en todas sus interacciones;

Fortalecernos coletictivamente para acabar con todas las formas de opresion;

Redivinir la forma como el trabajo es valorizado;

Defender la inviolabilidad de nuestras vidas privadas;

STATEMENT OF AUTONOMY

8:13 pm, Grey, Volunteer Reader:  Occupy Los Angeles is a movement for the people by the people. We are not a political party, we are not a business, we are not an organization; we are a movement of people standing in solidarity with one another across the world.

Our movement is comprised of independent individuals who take autonomous action to advance the movement every day. We encourage and respect this autonomous activity, but do not support those who claim to speak for Occupy LA unless requested to do so by the General Assembly. To all, we say:  Speak WITH us, not for us.

We welcome all who wish to engage in participatory, horizontal, transparent democracy and collective decision making. We welcome and respect dissent. We encourage the participation of individuals, groups and organizations who wish to support and engage with our movement knowing that doing so will mean questioning their own institutional frameworks and hierarchies, and integrating our principles into their modes of action.

We stand in solidarity with all other HORIZONTAL AND AUTONOMOUS 'Occupy' movements and communities, but also recognize and respect their autonomy, as we hope they will ours.

We want to emphasize that Occupy LA is not, and never has been, affiliated with any established political party, candidate or organization as this would directly contravene our sirit of independence. We strive to challenge the rigid, oppressive structures sustaining the inherent inequalities created by our current socioeconomic political reality. We seek to empower communities to share their collective resources and subvert laws and institutions which place profit above people.

8:17 pm, Elena:  Esteban! Great! Now we're going to have to do a Solidarity Clap [ALL ASSEBMBLY CLAPS IN SOLIDARITY]...

8:18 pm, Esteban:   Thanks to the west wind... ...Occupy Venice, Hermandad Mexicana, Occupy San Fernando Valley, Occupy CSUN, Youth Coalition for Community Action, Center-LA CAN, Food Not Bombs.

8:19 pm, Karo:  [SHE READS]... ...power is shared, not concentrated... ...we use Consensus and no... ...we use our hand signals and we'll get to that

BREAKOUT GROUP DISCUSSIONS

8:33 pm, Kandist:  [DESCRIBES WHAT THE DISCUSSION TOPIC ENTAILS]  ...The Occupy movement started in September 2011 to challenge the current economic, social and political relationships. The Occupy Movement strives to be horizontal, participatory, and directly democratic. We do this through our General Assembly, in which we come together as a people to discuss and make decisions. We use consensus to reach decisions, and we ensure that all voices are heard, all concerns addressed and no radical dissent is left. To communicate how we feel about decisions, we use hand signals...

8:33 pm, Esteban:  [TRANSLATES TO SPANISH]...

8:34 pm, Karoline:  The Occupy Movement has been about making our own change without others representing or making decisions for us. What are some of the most pressing issues your communities are working on? How do we make our own change away from this current system of injustice and inequality in our world?

[ALL ASSEMBLY SINGS TWO VERSES OF 'SOLIDARITY FOREVER' AND ACCOMPANYING CHORUS].

Solidarity forever!

Solidarity forever!

The Movement makes us strong!

When the Movement's inspiration

Through the workers' blood shall run,

There can be no power greater

Anywhere beneath the sun.

Yet what force on earth is weaker

Than the feeble strength of one?

But the Movement makes us strong.

Solidarity forever!

Solidarity forever!

The Movement makes us strong!

They have taken untold millions

that they never toiled to earn,

But without our brain and muscle

not a single wheel can turn.

We can break their haughty power;

Gain our freedom when we learn

That Movement makes us strong.

Solidarity forever!

Solidarity forever!

The Movement makes us strong!

9:51 pm, Michael Novick:  As we go marching, marching, in the beauty of the day,

A million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill lofts gray,

Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses,

For the people hear us singing: Bread and Roses! Bread and Roses!

As we go marching, marching, we battle too for men,

For they are women's children, and we mother them again.

Our lives shall not be sweated from birth until life closes;

Hearts starve as well as bodies; give us bread, but give us roses.

As we go marching, marching, unnumbered women dead

Go crying through our singing their ancient call for bread.

Small art and love and beauty their drudging spirits knew.

Yes, it is bread we fight for, but we fight for roses too.

As we go marching, marching, we bring the greater days,

The rising of the women means the rising of the race.

No more the drudge and idler, ten that toil where one reposes,

But a sharing of life's glories: Bread and roses, bread and roses.

Our lives shall not be sweated from birth until life closes;

Hearts starve as well as bodies; bread and roses, bread and roses.

9:03 pm, [SEVERAL WOMEN TAKE TURNS READING THE PROPOSAL] WHAT? Exclude Sam Resnick from all Occupy Los Angeles related activities until he meets with Radical Womyn’s Circle. WHY? In addition to the first womyn who was sexually assaulted By Sam Resnick, two more womyn have come forward about Sam Resnick sexually and verbally assaulting them. Despite repeated requests from the Radical Womyn’s Circle to speak to Sam Resnick, and confront his issues, he has refused to meet with us and shows no recognition of the horrendous impact his assaults have had on the victims he assaulted. Womyn at Pasadena City College have banned Sam Resnick from student activism due to his assault on a womyn who is involved in school activism there. Those womyn are here tonight amongst you. HOW? Because Occupy Los Angeles is committed to Womyn’s Rights and de-constructing patriarchy, we have drafted a statement stating the following: “The GA of Occupy Los Angeles has decided that in view of Sam Resnick’s sexual assault against all (3) victims, and his failure to exercise personal and collective responsibility in making reparations and confronting his issues, Sam Resnick’s presence represents a dangerous threat not only to the (3) victims he assaulted but to all the womyn within the Occupy Los Angeles community as a collective. We hereby declare that Sam Resnick must stay away from all Occupy Los Angeles actions, and activities, until he meets with Radical Womyn’s Circle and recognizes that what he has done is unacceptable.” [STACKS OPEN]... ...[NOTE TO SELF:  AFTER SOME EXPLANATION BY VARIOUS “RADICAL WOMYN’S CIRCLE” MEMBERS CONCERNING A ‘BRAVE NEW WAY’ TO ADDRESS ‘THIS’; THAT ITEM, WHICH OUR PRESENT JURISPRUDENT SYSTEM HAS “NO WAY” TO ADDRESS; THAT IS, THE VIOLATION OF ONE SLEEPING ANONYMOUS-TO-REMAIN-ANONYMOUS, BY ONE HAVING NO CONSENT AND SUBSEQUENTLY ADMITTING GUILT, THE POTENTIAL SEXUAL TRANSMISSION UNKNOWINGLY OF DISEASE/DISGRACE, AND OTHER RAMIFICATIONS THEREOF; ALONG WITH THOSE, OTHER PERSONS HAVING RESERVATIONS CONCERNING THIS “MOST IMPORTANT ‘THING’ WE (THE OCCUPADA) MUST GENERALLY ADDRESS NOW”; IN SOLIDARITY WITH, THOSE MOST IMPASSIONED FORGING A WAY FOR ‘THIS’ SITUATION-PRECEDENT WORK IN PROGRESS; ARE ASKING FOR, WHILE COMMANDING ATTENTION TO, CONTINUED DIALOGUE, EVENTUAL “TREATMENT” AND RESPECTABLE CLOSURE,  CONCERNING ‘THIS’].

Third Proposal

8:58 pm, Proposer, Armenian Genocide:  [THE PROPOSER AND SEVERAL OCCUPIERS TAKE TURNS READING A FLYER] …The Armenian Genocide was carried out by the 'Young Turk' government of the Ottoman Empire in 1915 and in 1916. One and a half million Armenians were killed. Most Armenians in America are children or grandchildren of the survivors, although there are still many survivors amongst us. As we commemorate this great tragedy on April 24 , not only are we saddened by the loss of so many souls; we also mourn the fact that the American government still does NOT recognize this as genocide, giving way to other horrendous events to take place all over the world.

On this day we join spirits with all survivors in remembering our forefathers. Such an unspeakably horrible act surpasses all religion, race, and politics; and [begs] for joint unity in human compassion. Help us mourn every life lost because of hatred, every child ripped from their mother's embrace and orphaned by evil, every tear shed daily for a lifetime reliving the memory of a neighbor butchered, a sister raped, a father shot, and a grandmother forced to see her children take their last breath. Help us recognize the first genocide of the 20th century and stop future atrocities from happening.

2012 marks the 97th year of the Armenian Genocide. It is our duty as survivors to keep our ancestors' spirits alive and educate the world of their suffering. We must acknowledge the past in order for us to move forward and thus keep this from EVER happening again, ANYWHERE in the world.

9:08 pm:  [CALLOUT/QUESTION FROM MITCHELL:  Ya… so, what is the proposal?]

9:08 pm, Proposer:  ...if the Occupy people can join the March on April 24th, at 4 pm, 6300 Wilshire, Meet here Tuesday at 3 pm.

9:08 pm:  [CONSENSUS WAS REACHED].

[INCLUDES WILLIAM SAROYAN QUOTE:  I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race:  THIS small tribe of unimportant people, WHOSE wars have all been fought and lost, WHOSE structures have crumbled; and whose literature is unread... music unheard, and prayers answered no more. GO AHEAD! Destroy Armenia. See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches; then, see if they will not laugh and sing again. For, when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.  [GO TO http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Saroyan AND READ].
