Statement from the Occupy Wall Street movement

nickinenglish's picture

This was unanimously voted on by all members of Occupy Wall Street last night, around 8pm, Sept 29. It is our first official document for release. We have three more underway, that will likely be released in the upcoming days: 1) A declaration of demands. 2) Principles of Solidarity 3) Documentation on how to form your own Direct Democracy Occupation Group. This is a living document.

Declaration of the Occupation of New York City

As we gather together in solidarity to express a feeling of mass injustice, we must not lose sight of what brought us together. We write so that all people who feel wronged by the corporate forces of the world can know that we are your allies.

As one people, united, we acknowledge the reality: that the future of the human race requires the cooperation of its members; that our system must protect our rights, and upon corruption of that system, it is up to the individuals to protect their own rights, and those of their neighbors; that a democratic government derives its just power from the people, but corporations do not seek consent to extract wealth from the people and the Earth; and that no true democracy is attainable when the process is determined by economic power. We come to you at a time when corporations, which place profit over people, self-interest over justice, and oppression over equality, run our governments. We have peaceably assembled here, as is our right, to let these facts be known.

They have taken our houses through an illegal foreclosure process, despite not having the original mortgage.

They have taken bailouts from taxpayers with impunity, and continue to give Executives exorbitant bonuses.

They have perpetuated inequality and discrimination in the workplace based on age, the color of one’s skin, sex, gender identity and sexual orientation.

They have poisoned the food supply through negligence, and undermined the farming system through monopolization.

They have profited off of the torture, confinement, and cruel treatment of countless nonhuman animals, and actively hide these practices.

They have continuously sought to strip employees of the right to negotiate for better pay and safer working conditions.

They have held students hostage with tens of thousands of dollars of debt on education, which is itself a human right.

They have consistently outsourced labor and used that outsourcing as leverage to cut workers’ healthcare and pay.

They have influenced the courts to achieve the same rights as people, with none of the culpability or responsibility.

They have spent millions of dollars on legal teams that look for ways to get them out of contracts in regards to health insurance.

They have sold our privacy as a commodity.

They have used the military and police force to prevent freedom of the press.

They have deliberately declined to recall faulty products endangering lives in pursuit of profit.

They determine economic policy, despite the catastrophic failures their policies have produced and continue to produce.

They have donated large sums of money to politicians supposed to be regulating them.

They continue to block alternate forms of energy to keep us dependent on oil.

They continue to block generic forms of medicine that could save people’s lives in order to protect investments that have already turned a substantive profit.

They have purposely covered up oil spills, accidents, faulty bookkeeping, and inactive ingredients in pursuit of profit.

They purposefully keep people misinformed and fearful through their control of the media.

They have accepted private contracts to murder prisoners even when presented with serious doubts about their guilt.

They have perpetuated colonialism at home and abroad.

They have participated in the torture and murder of innocent civilians overseas.

They continue to create weapons of mass destruction in order to receive government contracts.*

To the people of the world,

We, the New York City General Assembly occupying Wall Street in Liberty Square, urge you to assert your power.

Exercise your right to peaceably assemble; occupy public space; create a process to address the problems we face, and generate solutions accessible to everyone.

To all communities that take action and form groups in the spirit of direct democracy, we offer support, documentation, and all of the resources at our disposal.

Join us and make your voices heard!

*These grievances are not all-inclusive.

Thank you

Thank you occcupiers for giving your precious time to move our country in a different direction.

We do not forgive. We do not forget. We are silent no more. Corporations are not people... We are the 99%.  WE ARE the people.

Suggestion

I think it is a mistake to personify the object of our statement as "they." We are not dealing with a cohesive group but a hegemonic system. Also, personification plays right into the "corporations are people" trick.

Suggested additions concerning discrimination

To

"They have perpetuated inequality and discrimination in the workplace based on..."

it seems precisely fitting to add:

duration of unemployment, and credit score (even when that was damaged precisely due to the crisis perpetrated by Wall Street.)

Radical also means staying critical and not drinking anyone's kool-aid.

I have been occupying Wall St

I have been occupying Wall St. since day 2, and I assure you that no GA vote is "unanimous."

I support the movement, but please will everyone be careful not to undermine our group by making ridiculous claims about 'unanimous voting' when we in fact don't even have a formal voting system!?

Seriously, we wiggle our fingers upwards or downwards to show approval or disapproval. Consensus is determined by whether most people present perceive that there is more upwards or downwards wiggling. This does not account for the many downwards wigglers who get drowned out, nor the many passive personalities who just feel downright silly wiggling their fingers.

We can show our unity in other ways besides exaggerating, such as by cheerfully sticking together even if you don't  always get your way every time.

Please, NO Manifestos: K.I.S.S.

While not disagreeing with specific items...let's simplify. This is a hazard among many on the progressive side that often happens: We throw every conceived argument into a melange that soon becomes boring and forgettable. Let's develop an easy to remember, and repeat ...SHORT set of frames.

NOW, to define the 1% ...who are not just 'the rich' ( this feeds into the myths of common people, that dream about being rich someday, or who fool themselves that they ARE rich ), it might be constructive to promote some other defintion to help delineate. [ I have some history for coming up with new names that become part of the vernacular ].

The "1%" are what I have dubbed, the ANTI-PHILANTHROPISTS , but it is long. The root word 'philanthropy' comes from the Greek and literally means "love for mankind". Here are associated words with philanthropy and antonyms where applicable:

Humanitarianism, unselfish concern, donation,

Charity ( ant: stealing, taking ) , Generosity ( ant: greed, meanness, selfishness, stinginess ), Gift ( ant: forfeit, loss, penalty ) , Kindness ( ant: cruelty, harshness, meanness, barbarousness ).

I will be working on this defintion, but would appreciate others also conceptualizing this. Everyone wins when no one cares who gets the credit.

Corporal Thing A. 'Civilizationalist'

Suggestions

Once again... thank you for creating a collective consciousness through out this nation =D

It is clear society is screaming for some type of reform, what scares me is the many ideas and demands each individual possess. I feel the above demands and suggestions are too general and can be specified to target individual corporations; in "poisoning our food" there are organizations and protest specifically for that sole purpose (like The Millions Against Monsanto Org).

don't forget about the power of the consumer, If you buy it, they will make it....We need to educate those about the power of consumerism.

To clarify, monopolization refers to an offense under Sec 2 of the American Sherman Antitrust Act, passed in 1890. Sect 2 allows any person "who shall monopolize . . . any part of the trade or commerce among the several states, or with foreign nations shall be deemed guilty of a felony". If jurisdiction would abide by the laws and regulations set by the constitution TRUTHFULLY and justly, things would be better, but i feel the demands could target specific corrupt individuals like Commissioner Barney Frank.

In order to expose corruption, we need full transparency in all forms of government to expose wrong doings, justly, for the community.

we are doing the right thing by gathering massive amounts of passionate activists for one general cause, but now we need to condense our collective thoughts to one specific purpose. In due time.

on the fed level maybe this will help: http://www.pogo.org/investigations/government-corruption/
