The notion that America must be liked throughout the world, which is somehow still held by a large portion of the populace, must be cast aside in recognition of the crisis of trust we, as a society are currently facing. Generations externalizing responsibility upon their own future; the classical and Keynesian models were good building blocks but, in the face of mortal life the pursuit of self interest is unsustainable. Our ideas of politics, economics, religion/spirituality, and science must change if there is any hope for America; who views itself as a beacon for all things right and just in the world, to break the adamantium chains of debt and climb out of financial hell.
If lowering the American dollar is economically beneficial for us as a nation but scoffed at because we are afraid of how the rest of the world will view us, then we need to do so. Our trade deficit with China could in fact be reduced by taking a harder line on patent and copyright infringement. Why should we allow products from a country that counterfeits our own to sell them back to us cheaper while flooding markets in Asia that American business can’t compete in? Raise tariffs on cheap imports from countries that choose to use what could be seen as under-handed practices, an unpopular stance maybe but potentially effective. Actions speak louder than words, or so I’ve heard, and coming from the country where slavery was overcome and great strides have been made on behalf of equality amongst humanity; I expect more from our leaders on the rights of every human being, not just its own citizenry.
And what of should be done about multinational corporations? Well, let us first begin with the corporate paradigm; the 14th amendment rights should be stripped from corporations insofar as those who directly affect the path the company take should be held responsible for the actions they take. If they want to export jobs to exploit cheaper labor forces they are essentially depriving the labor in their own country the opportunity of viable employment, then there should be an off-shoring tax. If industry wants deregulation, they must understand that government will still act to protect those they are elected to represent from unfair and predatory practices. Government, know well that the people will act to protect themselves from fascism and tyranny. People please try to take the time (scarcest of all resources) to do the research to make informed decisions. Don’t be reliant on selfishness but rather upon the notion that we are one, and that is the underlying truth to all.
