Expansion Of The 5 And 134 Freeway Interchange

Forums:

My proposal is to expand the 5 and 134 freeway interchange that is already on the calendar for sometime around 2014 to include a top freeway running the length of the I5 freeway starting from the Victory Blvd. exit to the Echo Park exit.  This top freeway would run on both sides of the freeway (both southbound and northbound) but on top of the existing freeway.  Passenger vehicles will use the top freeway and large axle vehicles will use the existing bottom lanes.  Between these approximately 8 exits the passenger vehicles will be completely separated from the large trucks.  This will speed the flow of traffic and prevent sudden braking that causes continuous accidents on this stretch of highway.

There is no need to take away existing land to do this and it will still allow for 4 to 5 extra lanes of traffic in both directions.  The HOV lanes will remain but will be on the top freeway until they merge after the starting two exits.  The flow of traffic will run faster than it would by just expanding more lanes in the existing freeway.  Large axle vehicles are the main reason traffic piles up because they have to maintain slower speeds, take up at least two car lengths and drive very reckless a great deal of the time.  Added to the recklessness of passenger vehicle drivers weaving in and out of lanes occupied by large trucks it is a constant receipe for disaster.

My proposed idea is safer, more cost effective and way more efficient than the current proposal to expand the vacant land around this interchange.  I urge the residents of Los Angeles to help spread this idea to Caltrans so that they will give it serious consideration.  I am just a little guy with an idea and it is very difficult to be heard without other voices who support the idea.
