Friday evening, the 15th of June, 2012, at the meeting of the Civic Engagement Committee in Pershing Square, it was decided that some of us should take Occupy into our local government, at the least for purposes of observation to see what it is that they are up to, and perhaps even to attempt to get them doing a few things in our favor for a change.
To kick things off, some of us are planning on showing up for the City Council's "BUDGET & FINANCE" committee meeting on Monday, the 18th of June, at 2pm in room 1010 of City Hall. It meets there at that time every Monday but it has not yet been decided exactly on what schedule we should attend each of the committee meetings held by our City Council, so feel free to join us for Monday afternoon if you can make it, and we can talk later about where we go from there.
Fellow Occupier Rick Young came up with the idea and has been an advocate all along for direct interaction with the government, even going as far as to declare himself a candidate for Mayor with the intention of getting some REAL support for Occupy into that position in our local government. I know there are people in the Occupy movement who feel that our government is beyond fixing and needs to be simply thrown out, but we all know that would be a messy proposition so I'm asking that those who are willing work with us to attempt some repairs to the system as long as it's not being scrapped just yet. Anyway, I personally think that scrapping it will just mean that those who pretty much own it will end up replacing it with one they COMPLETELY own, so since there are things that we are supposed to be "allowed" to do as citizens to bring about change within the system, let's take advantage of all this OCCUPY diversity and get some direct action happening, shall we?
Here's a list of City Council Committee Meeting times and room numbers, along with a tentative suggestion for when Occupy might go to each of them. The suggested Occupy days for each meeting are so that we can have more of us show up at once, but if anyone wants to just show up, or to schedule with friends or fellow Occupiers, that's fine too of course.

You may want to check in

Donald, you may want to check in with those who actually started the civic engagement committee and were dedicated it for months. I started the Civic Engagement Committee back in September. We have our own list serv and text message system.
Welcome back

I wasn't sure exactly "how" to contact anyone who had been involved in it... but I figured anyone who cares about it would be happy to see it making progress regardless. As for the list serve, you can post to it if you like, but count me out. I would rather actually get things done than give myself yet more e-mail that I would never be able to find time to read. I see the spambots already found this thread, by the way. Anyway, feel free to post the suggested Occupy City Hall schedule to the list serve if you like. Tomorrow (Tuesday, the 19th) it's room 1060 @8:30am, room 1010 @ 1pm, and room 1050 @ 3pm.

Thats EXACTLY what I told him to do... Did he not contact you???
My words represent myself and not Occupy Los Angeles. @lizsavage on Twitter
This is common with Donald

He doesn't seem to be able to listen, communicate well, or work with others. He gets an idea in his head and he just runs with it regardless of who he runs over in the process.
Ohhh... More backbiting. Big surprise there

And you wonder why someone may not go out of there way to contact you? There you go.
Anyway... your statements about me are entirely false, but if you feel like spreading lies, there's not much I can do about it. Ill just continue to do what's best for the movement and if you wish to insult my efforts, feel free.

Let me rephrase that...
Submitted by TechnoZeus on
I perhaps could have done better, but I was attempting to avoid any repeat of personal attacks from which I still feel the pain, so I simply did what I could to help facilitate a plan that I felt had merit. Not MY plan, by the way... but one that I felt was worth supporting. I hope you will see the value in it as I have.

I would like to thank the SPAMBOT for the thoughtful comments
Submitted by TechnoZeus on
I would LIKE to do that, but unfortunately, none of the SPAMBOT's comments have shown the slightest signs of resembling anything I could consider "thoughtful". In fact, they look to me like they exist only to dilute our communication here and keep Occupy from accumplishing things. So, to whoever took the time to set up the SPAMBOT to do that, thanks for showing us that you see the potential for things to get accomplished by what we are trying to do. We'll continue to work hard at it, because that's the kind of people we are.
So, anyway, today I found out that the City Council's Committee meetings can get their schedules re-arranged, and may be difficult to pin down. I went for the 8:30am meeting of Arts Parks Health & Aging, only to find that it had been rescheduled to start at 1:30pm and run until 5pm. In fact, it seems the 5pm ending time is common., but from what I hear the actual meeting might last 15 minutes or perhaps not at all, and the rest of the time is simply allocated so that they can run later if they want. In other words, a room is reserved and may or may not get used. In fact, the one I went there for was posted in the hall as rescheduled, but according to http://lacity.org/SubMenu/CityMeetingsAgendas/index.htm it has been canceled... so we may want to consult that page when possible as we learn to get involved in order to bring about positive change. I ended up attending several hearings on zoning, which I did learn a few things from, but all things considered I would have rather been to the Court Support event this morning if I had known enough ahead of time to plan differently.
Another web page that may be useful for those of us who would like to get involved more is http://lacity.org/SubMenu/CityEventsCalendar/index.htm although I do not know the details of how all this works just yet. Hopefully more of us will get involved and we can teach each other as we learn.
So... anybody who's got admin privs feel like deleting the work of the SAPMBOT? Might not be worth the time, since it'll probably just do it again... but we've worked around background noise before. We can handle the distractions and continue to prevail.
